Home Learning Tuesday 23rd February 2021

Hello Year 5,

I hope you all had a great half term and managed to find plenty of time to relax and enjoy yourselves. It feels like such a long time since I spoke to you all and I am really looking forward to catching up with you all at our zoom meeting this morning at 9:30 where I will go through your learning for this week.

Have a lovely day,

Miss Stephens

English

Reading

Make sure that you are reading your book of choice for at least 30 minutes. I would like you to clarify what you are reading as you go along. Are there any words that you don’t understand? If so make sure you find out what these words mean. Don’t forget those reading stems.

Remember to complete your Lexia minutes to reach your target – I will be handing out dojos.

I will also be setting you a comprehension task to complete on purple mash. Make sure you read the chapter carefully before attempting to answer the questions. I am looking to see who is getting 5 out of 5.

Writing

We are starting a new sentence stacking unit this week and it is slightly different to anything that we have done before as we will be using a video rather than a book. We will be using the video to help us to write our own adventure story.

Here is the link to the video that we are going to be using.

CGI Animated Short Film: "One Small Step" by TAIKO Studios | CGMeetup - YouTube

For today’s plot point please only watch up to 1:02 minutes. We will be watching more tomorrow. Use the document below to help you to complete your sentence stacking. Don’t forget that the sentences that I have typed in green are your provided sentences. These do not need to be changed but must be included in your own writing to ensure that your sentences flow and make sense.

Handwriting

Log in to Letter - Join (https://www.letterjoin.co.uk/log-in.html) You all should have received an email about this containing the log in details that you need. Select Year 5, select harder words from the tabs on the left hand side of the screen and then you should see a word list. Click on your word of choice and then press play to watch the animation. Please write this word at least 5 times exactly as you see it on your screen. Please practice 3 words a day. Why not try and write 3 sentences including your words of choice - in your neatest handwriting of course!

Spelling/Vocabulary

Your new spelling words for this week are:

Precipitous

Cunning

Squint

Make sure you are using all of our spelling techniques that we use in class to help you to remember how to spell these words accurately. You also need to find out the meaning of these words and use them in a sentence. Please share your sentences to the English blog for me to double check.

Remember on Friday I will be quizzing you on these word so make sure you are prepared.

I realise it isn’t Monday and I’m a day late 😊 but this weeks theme is tomatoes – I am really looking forward to seeing your creations. Make sure you send me pictures of what you make to the Year 5 email so that I can put them into a PowerPoint to share at our zoom on Monday. I am already thinking carefully about what I can make.

Music

This half term we are going to be looking at Rap music, specifically the theme tune to the Fresh Prince of Bel Air which is by Will Smith.

Have you heard of Will Smith?

Have you ever watched the Fresh Prince of Bel Air?

Please watch the following link and then think about the questions below.

The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air Theme Song (Full) - YouTube

Did you like the song? Why? Why not?

Is it similar to any other songs you know?

Can you think of any other well known Rap songs or artists?

Do you like this type of music? Why? Why not?

Reading

Make sure that you are reading your book of choice for at least 30 minutes. I would like you to focus on inference today. How do you think the main character in your book is feeling? How do you know this? What evidence from the text supports your ideas? Remember the key word is because.

I think that my character feels……I know this because………

Remember to complete your Lexia minutes to reach your target – I will be handing out dojos.

I will also be setting you a comprehension task to complete on purple mash. Make sure you read the chapter carefully before attempting to answer the questions. I am looking to see who is getting 5 out of 5.

Today you will be writing plot point 2, in the video you need to watch up to 1:35. Please make sure you do not go on any further.

Please use the link to the document below to help to you to complete your sentence stacking. Write your completed plot point by hand then take a photo and post it either to the English blog or the year 5 email. I want to see beautiful handwriting and accurate punctuation. Remember to read back over your work and make sure you haven’t made any errors or missed any words.

What do you already know about gravity?

Please work your way through the attached PowerPoint and then summarise everything that you have learnt today. This should be done in bullet points.

If you would like to you could also create an informative poster explaining what gravity is. I will share good examples to the Year 5 display board.

Art

Today I would like you to add a Viking Longship to the collage background that you created before we broke up for half term.

You can make your longship however you like you might want to print a picture to stick, you might want to draw or paint or you might want to do a collage. The choice is yours.

Think carefully about where you want to position your longship, are you going to do it straight or do you want to make it look like it is crashing through the waves?

I look forward to seeing your final designs. Remember to send me some pictures.
