Hello Year 6,

Happy New Year! I am so sorry that we are not able to be in school at the moment but the good news is that we can keep in touch through this website and on Purple Mash! We are also going to try a Year 6 Zoom call! So make sure you have the link and password ready for our meeting at 10:00 am.

Below you will find your home learning tasks for today. Once you have completed them, you can send them to me using the Year 6 Blogs on Purple Mash.

English:

Reading: Make sure that you are reading for at least 30 minutes a day and that you are completing your Lexia minutes.

Writing: To explore simple and compound sentences

Watch the video and pause it as necessary, when you are asked to complete a task. In your Home Learning book, write 3 simple sentences and 3 compound sentences that each use a different co-ordinating conjunction. If you are unable to access this lesson, read the relevant pages in your English study book and complete the task above. Don’t forget to add your sentences to the Year 6 English Blog.

Handwriting: Log in to Letter-join (www.letter-join.co.uk), select Year 6, select ‘Resources’ from the tabs on the left hand side of the screen and choose ‘W Animator’. You will then see a word list called ‘Classification 1’. Click on the word ‘kingdom’ and you will see the animation screen; click ‘Play’. Watch the animation and then write the word in your ‘Home Learning’ book at least 5 times. Remember to use ‘Look, Cover, Write, Check’. Please practise 3 words a day. If you do not know what the word means – make sure that you look it up or ask me!

Maths:

Fluency: Please complete the questions on the PowerPoint and record your answers in your Home Learning book. If you are unable to access the class fluency session (or want to do a little bit more…), then please complete Section A of Exercise 1 from your CGP Mental Maths Workout book remembering to record your answers on the Year 6 Maths Blog so I can see and mark them.

Hello Year 6,

It was great to see you all on Zoom yesterday! Well done! If you didn’t get there yesterday, make sure you join us today at 10:00 am. Remember we have changed the password to something a little simpler. Your parents have been sent the new password and I have also added it to our Year 6 Blog. Please make sure that you have pencil and paper handy – I thought we’d do our fluency together during our Zoom call!

Well done to all of you for all your hard work yesterday, I was sent lots of things to mark and I hope you have worked out how to read my comments.

Writing: To explore complex sentences

Watch the video. (If you are unable to access this lesson, read the relevant pages in your English study book and/or your Year 6 Glossary.) In your Home Learning book, write 3 complex sentences: one beginning with ‘As’, one with ‘When’ and one with ‘If’. Don’t forget your commas!

For example:

As Miss M was typing the Year 6 Blog, she felt very lonely without her class.

When Year 6 come back to school, Miss M looks forward to seeing their smiley faces.

If it snows, Miss M will enjoy building a snowman.

Don’t forget to add your sentences to the Year 6 English Blog.

Hello Year 6,

Wow! You have certainly got back in to ‘school’ mode – the standard of work was so much better! I put all pieces that particularly impress me on the Year 6 Display Board. Is your work there?

Reading: Make sure that you are reading for at least 30 minutes a day and that you are completing your Lexia minutes.

Comprehension: (it is Thursday!) Please read the text and answer the questions from pages 2 and 3 of your CGP English Comprehension book. (You have two days to do this.) Make sure you add your answers to the Year 6 English Blog, so I can mark them. Remember to PEE!

In your Home Learning book, write 4 sentences which contain a relative clause, two using the relative pronoun ‘who’ and two using the relative pronoun ‘which’.

For example:

The girl, who had brown hair, stood quietly waiting for the bus.

An elephant, which is one of the largest mammals on Earth, can live for up to 70 years in the wild.

Don’t forget to add your sentences to the Year 6 English Blog.

Comprehension: (day 2!) Please read the text and answer the questions from pages 2 and 3 of your CGP English Comprehension book. (You have one day left to do this.) Make sure you add your answers to the Year 6 English Blog, so I can mark them. Remember to PEE!

Writing: To explore fronted adverbials
