Happy Monday Year 5,

I hope you all enjoyed your weekend and are feeling refreshed for the week ahead. Have you all looked out of the window and seen the snow? It looks lovely! We are now in Week 6 of our lockdown learning and you are all doing so well. Make sure you keep up the hard work 😊

Stay safe,

Miss Stephens

Reading

Make sure that you are reading your book of choice for at least 30 minutes. I would like you to summarise what you have read in 10 words.

Remember to complete those Lexia minutes – I will be handing out dojos.

I will also be setting you a comprehension task to complete on purple mash. Make sure you read the chapter carefully before attempting to answer the questions. I am looking to see who is getting 5 out of 5.

Writing

Sentence stacking day 4! Please use the link to the document below to help to you to complete your sentence stacking. Remember that you need to be changing the bits that I have highlighted using either your own ideas or my suggestions to help you. Write your completed plot point by hand then take a photo and post it either to the English blog or the year 5 email. I want to see beautiful handwriting and accurate punctuation. Remember to read back over your work.

Handwriting

Log in to Letter - Join (https://www.letterjoin.co.uk/log-in.html) You all should have received an email about this containing the log in details that you need. Please write this word at least 5 times exactly as you see it on your screen. Please practice 3 words a day. Why not try and write 3 sentences including your words of choice - in your neatest handwriting of course!

Spelling/Vocabulary

We have 3 new words to learn this week and they are:

Sweltering

Tantalising

Please make sure you find out what these words mean and use them in a sentence. You can share your sentences to the blog so that I can check you are using the words correctly.

You also need to be using all of our spelling techniques to practice spelling these words ready for the quiz on Friday. This week our quiz will have 15 words as I will be including all of the other words we have covered to make sure they’re staying fresh in your mind.

Today we are going to be learning about how and why the Vikings invaded Britain. Please make sure you work your way through the whole PowerPoint reading all of the information and looking carefully at any pictures or maps.

When you have done this I would like you to make me a timeline that includes all of the events you just read about starting in AD 787 all the way up to AD 1066. Please remember to take a photo of your completed timeline and share it with me. Feel free to illustrate your timeline if you would like to. I don’t mind how you choose to present your timeline so long as all of the key events are included.

Hello Year 5,

I hope you are all well. Today is safer internet day. Please, please make sure that you all arrive at our zoom meeting on time today (9:30am) as we are going to have a discussion about internet safety and we have lots to get through. I look forward to seeing you all.

Hello Year 5,

I hope you are all well and enjoying the learning activities that I am setting for you. Don’t forget to send me the pictures of your bread recipes so that I can share them with you on our zoom on Friday. I have already made mine 😊 I hope you enjoyed the PowerPoint that we went through yesterday about being safe on the internet. Hopefully, when you now see things on the internet you will think about them slightly differently and not just take things at face value. I look forward to seeing the work that you complete today – don’t forget to keep emailing me and sharing pictures to the blog. This is your last week before half term to impress me and earn yourself a certificate…who’s it going to be?

PSHE – Children’s Mental Health Week

The theme of Children’s Mental Health Week is ‘Express Yourself.’ Expressing yourself means finding a creative way of sharing your thoughts, feelings and ideas with others.

Watch this video…can you spot the different ways people are expressing themselves?

Made with Pond5: Express Yourself - YouTube

Today I would like you to come up with your own creative way to express yourself. You can use one of the ideas that I have suggested below or you may have an idea of your own.

Home Learning Friday 12th February 2021

Happy Friday Year 5,

Well done for making it through another week of lockdown learning and to the end of this strange half term. It hasn’t been the half term that we were expecting at all but I have been so impressed with how well you have adapted and how much effort you have put in. You really are Holdbrook Heroes, and you should all be super proud of yourselves – I know I am proud of you! Next week there will be no Zoom calls or website/blog updates as you have a week off to relax and enjoy some lie ins. You have earnt it! I will speak to you all again on Tuesday 23rd February when our 9:30 Zoom meetings start again.

Have a lovely break, get some rest and stay safe,

Miss Stephens

Reading

Make sure that you are reading your book of choice for at least 30 minutes. I would like you to focus on predicting today. When you make your predictions remember to use clues from the text to help you and explain why you think something is going to happen using the word because.

Remember to complete your Lexia minutes to reach your target – I will be handing out dojos.

I will also be setting you a comprehension task to complete on purple mash. Make sure you read the chapter carefully before attempting to answer the questions. I am looking to see who is getting 5 out of 5.

Writing

Today you will be writing your Spring themed Haiku.

Remember a Haiku is only 3 lines long.

It does not have to rhyme.

Line 1 – 5 syllables

Line 2 – 7 syllables

Line 3 – 5 syllables

Use your ideas that your brainstormed yesterday (and that we will discuss in our zoom today) to help you to write your Haiku.

Please share your Haiku to the English blog – before you post double check that you have used the correct number of syllables as this is the most important thing and I will be asking you to make changes if you haven’t managed to do this.

You could also publish your Haiku as if it is going up on display and then send me a  picture to the Year 5 email. Try and stick to the spring theme so maybe cut out a flower shape or a Easter egg shape and write your Haiku on this? Make sure it looks lovely and colourful and remember to use your neatest joined writing.

Screen Free Afternoon

We have spent a lot of time on our devices and the internet over the past few weeks so this afternoon I would like you to do something a little different.

I have attached some examples of non-screen activities to have a go at. You don’t have to do them all just pick the ones that appeal to you most. You could also try some of these during half term if you are looking for some activities to keep you busy.

Optional Extras

Valentines day – As I am sure many of you know Sunday 14th February is Valentines Day.  Traditionally Valentines day was a day to honour Saint Valentine. Over time this has changed and today it has less religious emphasis and is more a day to celebrate those we love. People often buy cards and gifts such as flowers and chocolates to ask the person that they love to be their Valentine. Why not have a go at making your own Valentines day card for someone that you love – this could be someone in your family such as a Parent, Sibling or Grandparent or you may wish to make your card for a friend instead. Remember, don’t go out and buy anything to do this just use things that you already have around your home.

Pancake day (Shrove Tuesday) – This year pancake day falls on Tuesday 16th February. As we won’t be having Monday Munch that week (due to it being half term) why not try and make some pancakes? What is your favourite pancake topping? Do you know why it is tradition to make pancakes on pancake day? Again, do not got out and buy ingredients especially and don’t worry if you are unable to do this it is just a suggestion for those of you who can and want to. Feel free to send me pictures of any pancakes that you do make to the Year 5 email – I will be responding when half term is over.
