Read Write Inc

In September 2019, we decided to introduce Read Write Inc phonics to our school as a way to get children reading and writing quickly with a life long love of reading.

The programme enables teachers to develop children’s skills in reading, writing, spoken language, vocabulary, grammar and spelling in an fully integrated way, to raise standards in children’s literacy and spark a lifelong love of reading.

The children are assessed regularly and put in small focus groups to support them with the early stages of reading and writing.

Once children have grasped a good understanding of their phonics and they have completed the phonics programme they go on to read quality texts as a whole class and in small groups. 

During this whole class reading session and paired or small group reading the children progress through the seven key skills identifies within the national curriculum to support the reading and understanding of a wide range of texts. These are:

• Predicting
• Making connections
• Asking questions
• Evaluating
• Inferring
• Summarising
• Clarifying

While children read their book with their partner they are encouraged to stop and have discussions using a range of sentence stems.
